Jerry Stuart
Jerry learned his first mandolin tunes from
his father, Blake back in the 1950's. It didn't
take long before his dad realized that Jerry
needed to move on to a higher level, so he
suggested the music of Bill Monroe. That
suggestion started a life long journey that
has established Jerry as one of the finest
Monroe style players around.
Jerry attended college in the late 1950's in
Washington DC in pursuit of a career in
engineering. During that time his music
continued to blossom as he recorded an
original mandolin tune, "Rocky Run" for the
Folkways album "Mountain Music Bluegrass
Style". Musicians included Tom Gray, Pete
Kuykendall and Smiley Hobbs. That
recording is still available today through the
Smithsonian Folkways releases.
In 1970 Jerry made it to the stage of the
Grand Ole Opry with the NC band, The
Bluegrass Gentlemen. Throughout the late
1970's and early 80's Jerry was a member of
the Green Valley Ramblers. In 1977 County
Records released an album titled "Jerry
Stuart Rocky Run" (County 767). The album
featured 9 original songs written by Jerry.
Through the years Jerry's compositions have
been recorded by other groups such as The
Country Gentlemen, Country Cooking,
Garland Shuping, The Bluegrass Alliance,
Longview, Skip Gorman and most recently
Sam Bush.
Jerry had several opportunities to tour
professionally, however he chose to remain
in his hometown of Siler City, NC where he
continued his engineering work and raised
his family. Now retired, Jerry still enjoys
playing and teaching music.
